A shabbat meal to support a Labor candidate
NSW Labor held a special Shabbat meal on the State’s South Coast to support its candidate and local nurse Annette Alldrick.
It was organised by South Coast ALP members and was attended by about a dozen people at the home of Ms Deborah Shapira.
It was co-hosted by Michelle Miran, who is also Jewish and ran as Labor’s candidate on the South Coast in 2007.
Ms Shapira, a graduate of Hebrew University in Jerusalem is the daughter of NSW Jewish Board of Deputies general franchise member, the late-Miron and late-Judy Shapira.
Her father, Miron Shapira ran as a State candidate in Lane Cove in 1981 and 1984; and in 1973 in the famous Gordon campaign, where the Liberal candidate forgot to nominate and the DLP won.
Ms Miran and Ms Shapira have both lived on the South Coast for a number of years and say that the Jewish community numbers around 100 in the region.
NSW Labor frontbencher and deputy chair of the NSW Parliamentary Friends of Israel, Walt Secord gave a keynote address, talking about his personal connection with the Jewish community, his time as a journalist at the Australian Jewish News and the failure of the Liberals to provide adequate health care on the State’s South Coast, particularly at Shellharbour, Shoalhaven, Milton-Ulladulla and Bega hospitals.
The Shabbat was also in support of Annette Alldrick, a local nurse, Shoalhaven Labor Councillor and mother of three, who is Labor’s candidate on the South Coast against Liberal speaker Shelley Hancock.
“Michelle Miran and Deb Shapira were wonderful hosts,” Mr Secord said.
“ Michelle and Deb laid out a wonderful feast including challah, kugel, tzimmes and latkes.”
“They also explained Jewish tradition including the lighting of the candles on Shabbat to the non-Jewish ALP branch members on the South Coast,” Mr Secord added.
How any sensible Jewish person can support the ALP is beyond me.
With the support of Bob Carr, they are moving to accepting a Palestinian State, and becoming more and more antagonistic towards Israel.
No wonder we are our own worst enemies.
