A Cry for Help and a Chance to Answer
As the Brisbane River continues to rise, Jewish families have been evacuated from their homes and the local Chabad has put out a call for emergency food supplies…a call answered by Sydney’s Our Big Kitchen.
The Kitchen’s cooking facilities have been made available to the entire community by its executive director Rabbi Dovid Slavin who told J-Wire: “We have made the Kitchen available to anyone who would like to help by baking for those expected to be affected by the Queensland floods.”
The Kitchen, based in the basement of the Sydney Yeshiva in Flood St, Bondi, has become a depot for the food appeal. Rabbi Slavin told J=Wire: “We can accept only packaged and canned Kosher foods…but we are baking in the kitchen. We will supply the ingredients but we need man and woman power to come in any day between 10 and six except Friday when the kitchen closes at 2 p.m. to help with the baking.”
Torahs have been moved from within Brisbane’s Hebrew Congregation’s Margaret St Synagogue with some being transported to the home of Rabbi Levi Jaffe where services are to be held while others were moved to a high location within the synagogue hall.
