Walt Secord is the NSW Parliamentary Friends of Israel Deputy Chair and sends this Chanukah message.

“Once again, I am delighted to wish all my friends and family in the NSW Jewish community – a Happy Chanukah.

From Sunday, December 2 at sunset until Monday, December 10 at sunset, the Jewish community will mark Chanukah. This will occur across the State with celebrations at Bondi Beach, Martin Place, Byron Bay, Double Bay, St Ives, Chatswood and the South Coast.

Chanukah, the festival of lights marks the liberation of the Jewish people, the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and the miracle of the oil that burned for eight consecutive nights.

With the lighting of each candle on the menorah, Chanukah celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, freedom over oppression and good over evil.

In turn, our society must find the light within and bring warmth to all of those around us.

Chanukah is also an occasion to reflect on the rich diversity of cultures and faiths in our State – where people of all backgrounds live and work side by side.

Let us each spread our warmth, and our light, by setting an example of resilience, tolerance, peace and goodwill towards all.

As the Deputy Leader of the Labor Opposition in the Legislative Council and the deputy chair of the NSW Parliamentary Friends of Israel, I wish all Jewish community members a happy Chanukah.”
