A historic occasion took place at the ACT Jewish Community, Canberra, Australia when Past-President Len Dixon celebrated the 90th anniversary of his Barmitzvah.
Len, a Kohen, read the first aliyah from the Torah and his daughter, Josephine, gave the Dvar Torah.
Len was born in the East End of London and, like many of his generation, could not speak English until he went to school.
He emigrated with his wife Ruth and three daughters over 60 years ago and worked in the public service until his retirement. His celebration occurred in the week of his wife’s 40th Yartzeit.
Len’s big passion has been bridge, and he wrote the bridge column in the Canberra Times for 50 years until he was over 100. He only retired from that position when, for whatever reason, the paper stopped publishing its weekly bridge and chess columns, both of which had a good standard.
The service was followed by a Kiddush/lunch in Len’s honour. Attending a packed Shul were his daughters, Josephine from Canberra and Felicity from Adelaide, and 2 grandchildren. Len has 5 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
