$92,000 government funding for Melbourne Jewish organisations
Zionism Victoria, Beth Weizmann Jewish Community Centre (BWJCC) and the Lamm Jewish Library of Australia (LJLA) have secured over $90,000 in State Government grants for projects that will benefit the local community.
Last night Philip Dalidakis MP and several of his Government colleagues and Labor candidates for the forthcoming State election attended the Zionism Victoria Executive Meeting to present a cheque for $92,200.
Special guests included Nick Staikos MP, Steve Dimopoulos MP and Sorina Grasso, Labour Candidate for Caulfield. Mr Dalidakis, a member of our community spoke of Labor’s support for Israel and our Jewish community and emphasised Premier Daniel Andrews’ commitment to Israel and the Jewish community.
Sam Tatarka, chair of Beth Weizmann Jewish Community Centre acknowledged the outstanding efforts of Zionism Victoria’s Daniella Gozlan who together with Executive Director Jean Katzen and Lamm Library Director Lauren Joffe, worked tirelessly to secure this significant funding which will further enhance the services they currently provide.
$47,000 of the funds were allocated under the “pick my project” scheme which allowed the community at large to have a say in how the available funds under the program were to be allocated. This demonstrates that our work not only has the support of Government but is supported at the grassroots level by our community.
Mr Dalidakis thanked Sam Tatarka, Chairman of the Beth Weizmann Jewish Community Centre for his persistence and ongoing work both behind and in front of the scene to ensure the security of the community centre and those who work and gather here.
The grants were made received for the following projects,
Lamm Jewish Library of Australia
The LJLA was granted $26,000 for the purchase of a community bus and $20,000 for the development of a community garden. Both these projects will further build the sense of community already so strong within the walls of BWJCC.
Beth Weizmann Jewish Community Centre
Beth Weizmann Jewish Community Centre received $6,200 towards capacity building & participation.
Zionism Victoria
Zionism Victoria was granted $40,000 for the Jakob Frankiel Connecting Cultures educational program. Connecting Cultures is a FREE program offered to all Victorian schools and communal organisations which aims to foster cross-cultural awareness.
By educating and informing students and their teachers, Zionism Victoria enriches their understanding of Jewish culture and history, the Jewish connection to Israel and helps cultivate values of tolerance and respect. Receipt of this funding recognises the Government’s commitment to this important project.
Zionism Victoria, BWJCC and LJLA wish to thank the Premier, Daniel Andrews and the Victorian Government for their longstanding and steadfast support and are deeply appreciative of the recognition of the importance of these Community Projects.
