President Herzog staying at same Swiss hotel as Herzl
President Isaac Herzog and the First Lady of Israel are staying at the Grand Hôtel Les Trois Rois (Three Kings Hotel) in Basel, in the same room in which Theodor Herzl slept during the Fifth Zionist Congress in 1901.
The famous photograph of Herzl standing on the balcony of this hotel room became a symbol of the Zionist vision.
President Herzog is visiting Switzerland for the 125th anniversary of the first World Zionist Congress held in that city in 1897.
In honor of this festive anniversary, President Herzog reenacted Herzl’s famous balcony photo, just as his late father, Israel’s Sixth President, Chaim Herzog, did during his state visit to Switzerland in 1987. In this respect, said the President’s office, the reenactment was a form of both personal and national closure.
Earlier Monday President Herzog was welcomed by Swiss President Ignazio Cassis to Lohn Manor the official estate of the Swiss Federal Council, outside Bern, the capital of the Swiss Confederation, in a ceremony featuring an honor guard.
During his official visit to Switzerland, President Isaac Herzog will participate in a gala event Monday night celebrating the 125th anniversary of the First Zionist Congress in Basel, Switzerland.
