Changes within the The Executive Council of Australian Jewry

A new vice-president and the admission of the Jewish National Fund were highlights of the The Executive Council of Australian Jewry AGM held in Melbourne yesterday.

Also approved were new policies on anti-discrimination involving the Gay and Lesbian communities and with members of the community experiencing disabilities.

Nina Bassat, the former ECAJ Deputy-President has handed over her role to John Searle. Searle has recently given up the presidency of the The Jewish Community Council of Victoria, a position taken on by Bassat.

The conference, held in Melbourne, heard an in camera analysis of recent events in the Middle East by Israel’s ambassador to Australia, Yuval Rotem. He gave his impressions as to how those events will impact on Israel’s future.

The Council has admitted the Jewish National Fund of Australia Inc as an affiliate effective immediately together with COSA, the Council of Orthodox Synagogues of Australia.

The AGM was addressed by Dr Helen Szoke, Australia’s Race Discrimination Commissioner and Shmuel Ben-Shmuel, the deputy Consul-General at Israel’s consulate in New York.
